Bonsai's $9 plan has no invoicing. The real comparison is Bonsai Essentials at $19/month against HoneyBook Starter at $29/month. Here's which one a freelancer should pay for.
Bonsai’s $9 plan can’t send an invoice.
That surprises most people comparing these two tools. Bonsai’s cheapest plan, Basic, has no invoicing, no contracts and no proposals. The cheapest Bonsai plan a freelancer can actually bill clients from is Essentials, at $19/month billed yearly. HoneyBook’s cheapest plan, Starter, costs $29/month billed yearly and includes all three.
So the real gap is $10 a month, not $20. And the two tools spend that money on different things: Bonsai on a back office, HoneyBook on bringing in and converting clients.
| Bonsai | HoneyBook | |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest plan with invoices & contracts | Essentials — $19/user/month billed yearly, $25 monthly | Starter — $29/month billed yearly, $36 monthly |
| Pricing unit | Per user | Per plan (team members included by tier) |
| Cheapest plan overall | Basic — $9/month yearly, $15 monthly (no invoicing) | Starter |
| Free plan | No (7-day trial) | No (free trial, no card required) |
| Main strength | Time, expense and project tracking | Lead forms, automations, scheduling |
Which plan is cheapest for a freelancer who sends invoices?
Bonsai Essentials. It costs $19/month billed yearly, or $25/month billed monthly. HoneyBook Starter costs $29/month billed yearly, or $36/month billed monthly.
Ignore Bonsai Basic for billing. At $9/month yearly it looks like the bargain, but it leaves out invoices, contracts and proposals. It suits project and storage needs, not getting paid.
The price gap grows with a team. Bonsai charges per user, so two people on Bonsai Premium pay $58/month on yearly billing. HoneyBook Essentials covers up to 2 team members for $49/month billed yearly.
Is there a free plan?
No. Bonsai offers a 7-day trial. HoneyBook offers a free trial with no credit card required; its pricing page showed 30 days when we checked, but the length varies by offer. Neither has a permanent free plan.

What Bonsai does well
Bonsai is a back office in one subscription. Essentials adds invoicing, contracts and proposals, with 100 GB of storage. Premium, at $29/user/month yearly or $39 monthly, adds time tracking, expense and income tracking, a Gantt view and workload management, with 500 GB of storage.
It also connects to QuickBooks, Xero, Zapier, Calendly and Google. If you already track hours and expenses, Bonsai can replace two or three separate tools.
Elite costs $49/user/month yearly or $59 monthly, and requires at least 3 users. It’s built for small agencies, not solo freelancers.
What HoneyBook does well
HoneyBook is built around the client pipeline. Starter includes 2 live lead forms and unlimited clients and projects. Essentials, at $49/month yearly or $59 monthly, adds automations, a built-in scheduler and SMS reminders, raises lead forms to 10 and allows up to 2 team members.
Premium costs $109/month yearly or $129 monthly. It removes the lead-form cap, allows up to 10 team members and lets you run several companies from one account.
If your work starts with an inquiry form and ends with a booked call, HoneyBook covers that whole path. If you only need scheduling, a dedicated tool is cheaper; see our Cal.com vs Calendly comparison.
How do you get paid?
Both tools send invoices, but the money still has to land somewhere. If your clients are abroad, the account receiving payments matters as much as the invoicing tool. Our Payoneer vs Revolut Business comparison covers which one keeps more of each payment.
The verdict
Pick Bonsai Essentials if you’re a solo freelancer who wants invoices, contracts and proposals at the lowest price, $19/month billed yearly. Move to Premium only when you need time and expense tracking.
Pick HoneyBook if new clients reach you through inquiry forms and you want follow-ups to run on their own. Start on Starter; move to Essentials when you need automations or a second team member.
For most solo freelancers, Bonsai Essentials is the better buy.
